Beasts of Asia EP04 - Dancing with cranes
Sonam is sad. She dreams of being chosen to perform the crane dance to honor Bhutan’s national bird, the Black Necked Crane, and is crushed when she is rejected as not good enough. Her mother left home awhile ago, and her father often has to go away from home to earn money, leaving someone to look after Sonam. Why do adults build houses and then never come home? What a pile of contradictions! One day, a woman arrives at their house – sent, she says, by Sonam’s father to take care of her while he’s away. But this woman seems different. Could she be her father’s new girlfriend? And how does she know so much about Black Necked Cranes, and how to dance exactly as they do? The mysterious woman takes Sonam under her wing, and Sonam begins to learn from her.
Twelve Asian countries have come together for international co-production series planned by EBS for the children and youth. The myth of each country was interpreted in a modern way to capture the voices of children. Three episodes will be screened at the theater: First, "Training in Pairs" depicts the healthy competition based on the Korean myth of Dangun. Second, "Knock, knock, knock!" is a story of finding oneself through Indian myth of good and evil. Third, "Dancing with cranes" tells a story of comforting others in the absence of a family member, based on the motif of Bhutan’s black-necked crane myth. The other two episodes, "The Country Man", based on the founding myth of Mongolia, and "My Hero, Quang Hai", based on the toad myth of Vietnam, are available on online festival platform, OnfifN.
